It was the beginning of a career that would lead to a revolutionary discovery in the steel industry. As they were preparing for World War I, the British struggled with rusty gun barrels. Harry Brearley, who had now risen to a position as manager at Sheffield’s steel laboratory, took on the task and explored what would happen if chromium was added to the alloy. The resulting material was extremely resistant to rust – and today we call it stainless steel.
